ARE THESE NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA A BLESSING OR A CURSE TO NIGERIA TODAY?

It is estimated that between 5 to 10 million Nigerians have their permanent abode in the 213 other countries of the world today in the year 2013. Majority of these Nigerians were born and bred in Nigeria before they decided for all the reasons that are reasonable or unreasonable to many under the sun before they relocated abroad. These millions of Nigerians in the diaspora today still have strong family and social ties that are still deeply rooted in Nigeria today. Many of these Nigerians in diaspora are the major source of pride to themselves, their families and Nigerian nation because of their personal achievements and accomplishments in life abroad. Many other Nigerians that are living in the diaspora at the moment are also very busy soiling the names and their reputations with their criminal activities and dirty deals in these foreign lands.

Today, according to the Western Union, MoneyGram and the other foreign currency transferring agencies, these Nigerians that are living abroad send home close to $10 billion yearly or 33% of the Nigeria's annual budget to their families and friends in Nigeria. The money they send home is helping directly to alleviate many Nigerians from the effects of the chronic or abject poverty, especially in the life of their direct family members and friends. This money that they remit home regularly is also a major boost to the Nigeria's national and local economy which increases the availability of hard currencies at home and the local consumer spending in Nigeria. In conclusion and in all reality:are these Nigerians that live presently in diaspora a curse or a blessing to the Nigerian nation today? Think about it objectively.
