This is a very divisive and a controversial issue in America today. America as a country practices constitutional democracy that is based on the popular representation in the three tiers or branches of the United States government. The constitution of America is the supreme law of this nation and it governs the legal rights of the all American citizens and residents as well as the legal power, authority and the legal limitations of the American government. The entire constitution of America does not specify any official language anywhere nor does it imposed any language including English to be the official lingua franca for this nation or her citizens and residents.
The American Standard English remains the most popular and the majority language that most Americans speak, read, write and can understand. English is the language of prosperity and public opinion in America. English is the official language of academic instruction in all American schools and colleges. English remains the most popular and the majority language for business, commerce, sport, entertainment, politics, employment, workplaces and in most news media. Today in America, the English language is facing a serious competition from the Spanish language. The Spanish language is now the fastest growing language in America today because of the rapidly and the fastest growing Latino population.
Demographers and linguists have projected that by the year 2050, the population of the minority Americans will overtake the Caucasian population for the first time since the great union was founded about 236 years ago. This future development that is inevitable may eventually compelled the future Americans to become bi-lingua by learning the Spanish language alongside with English language. In the future in America, workplaces, schools, colleges, businesses, news media and entertainment world may also required a proficiency in Spanish language for all their students and employees. For now only time can surely tell.
