"THE ILLEGALITY OF THE STOP-AND-FRISK POLICY DEFINES THE LEGACY OF MAYOR BLOOMBERG OF NEW YORK CITY"

Time, history and posterity are the three reliable and incorrigible judges of the legacies of all human leaders in life. Mayor Bloomberg of the America's largest city of New York introduced the policy of stop-and-frisk into the New York Police Department (NYPD) as the way to reduce the crime rate in this commercial capital city of America. The NYPD has stopped over 600,000 persons under this policy since its inception and about 86% of those stopped were either African-Americans or Latino-Americans with only 12% of all those persons stopped under this official policy were found to have broken the law.

The United States federal judge today declared that this policy of stop-and-frisk policy of the New York Police Department directly violated the constitutional rights of the America minorities in the city of New York and called for a federal monitor to oversee broad reforms. Judge Shira A. Scheindlin, found that the Police Department of New York city had “adopted a policy of indirect racial profiling” that targeted young minority men for stops. This judge then went further in her judgement by declaring that “I also conclude that the city’s highest officials have turned a blind eye to the evidence that officers are conducting stops in a racially discriminatory manner,”

The federal court ruling today is a victory for the American minorities that were primarily targeted by this stop-and-frisk policy. This is also a constitutional victory that upholds the rights of all Americans to the Fourth Amendment which protects them against unreasonable searches and seizures by the government as well as the 14th Amendment which provides all Americans with equal treatment and protection under the same supreme law of the United States. This legal decision from this federal court today has now officially defined clearly the true legacy of Mayor Bloomberg of New York city which is "using the tax payers' supported New York Police Department to violate the United States constitution and to promote racial profiling against the American minorities under his watch as the mayor of the New York city." .
